We
wanted to get from the UK to NZ as quickly as possible to maximise our time
there; we also wanted to avoid flight changes to minimise the risks of missed
connections and lost luggage. Hello Air New Zealand.
Despite
a single flight over two legs that still meant twenty five hours each way. How to
minimise the “pain” and jet lag? Premium economy.
Via
Hong Kong, Air New Zealand Premium economy seats are the same width as economy and
3-3-3 configuration; however, the greater space between rows means more legroom
and more recline, with the bonus of only four rows and dedicated cabin staff.
Business
class food and premium wines, personal service (I can’t remember the last time my
name was used by a flight attendant), and noise-cancelling headphones all made
the flight easier.
Did
premium economy make any difference to the jet lag? We’ll never know. However, being
further upfront in the plane prior to disembarking and priority baggage, meant
we had landed, were through Auckland customs, immigration and bio-control and
in arrivals in twenty five minutes. We hit Auckland tired but running with no
significant jet lag over the following days.
Was
premium economy worth it? Yes. It may not be business class but it was an
excellent compromise on such a long journey.
